Honda expands Takata Airbag Recall by 4.9M

Honda is releasing one more round of cars to a large recall around the globe for vehicles which were fitted with faulty airbags produced by Takata.

The automaker says that totally 4.89 cars fall under this last expansion. 1.72 million of these cars are in Japan. The location of other recalls is going to be announced regionally. Honda has stated that there are no new affected cars in Canada and America.

The problem lies in airbag inflators. They can explode shooting metal shrapnel at the people in the vehicle. The producer is not aware of any deaths or injuries in the new party of vehicles under consideration. Meanwhile, six deaths have been linked to problematic Takata airbag inflators in the producer’s cars.

This news makes a total 36 million cars being recalled around the globe since 2008 because of Takata airbag inflators. An investigation from Takata’s side discovered that moisture seeping into the inflators can cause the propellant to lose density with the lapse of time. This will raise the risk of inflator rapture.

The automaker is going to change the driver-side inflators into the ones developed by Autoliv and Daicel. At the same time, the inflators from the passenger side will be changed by Daicel and Takata.

Nissan and Toyota also stated about expansions to their Takata airbag recalls yesterday. The recalls affect 6.5 million vehicles more. A Toyota subsidiary, Daihatsu, stated that 260,000 cars will be called back for replacing of the inflators.
