Audi Q1 Approved as Automaker's 4th SUV

Crossovers may soon overrun sedans as the go-to means of personal transportation around the developed world and Audi is going to stay at the forefront adding yet another utility model to its family.

Joining the current Q7, Q5 and Q3 (not offered in North America) will be the Q1, a vehicle that will help enlarge the brand’s sales as a high-volume, low-cost product.

“The Audi Q1 is a part of our broad-based SUV tactics. It is created on the basis of the modular transverse motor concept and will round off our Q series at the bottom end,” announced Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG.

It is known that Audi’s SUV plans don’t stop with the Q1 either, with rumors suggesting coupe-styled SUVs possibly called Q4 and Q6, while another reports have mentioned a possible Q9.

By 2020 Audi will enlarge its model lineup from 49 units to more than 65 as it’s going to reach sales of more than 2 million models per year.

Audi has announced that Q1 will go into production in 2016 at its facility in Ingolstadt.
